Petit Steak - Israel-approved cultivated beef

It’s just announced that the sale of cultivated beef has been approved in Israel - the third country to green light this novel technology!

Aleph Farms took 1.5 years to reach this stage - the approval to manufacture and sell cultivated beef in Israel, with specific rules from the health ministry on labelling and marketing.

They have announced that “Petit Steak” would be the first product introduced to diners, and priced similarly to premium conventional beef. The thin-cut steak would be a hybrid meat of:

  • cells from the black Angus cow, Lucy (non-modified, non-immortalized cells)
  • plant protein matrix of soy & wheat

The cells are grown in an aseptic production environment, using non animal-derived components (no fetal bovine serum) and no antibiotics throughout the cultivation process to the final product; Such as in Eat Just’s cultivated chicken.

They are in the process of applying for regulatory approval in Singapore, Switzerland, the UK and the US too.

Looking back on the past launches:

December 2020, Singapore - Eat Just, cultivated chicken

March 2023, US - Eat Just, cultivated chicken

June 2023, US - Upside Foods, cultivated chicken

January 2024, Israel - Aleph Farms, cultivated beef

With various start-ups also racing to launch their products, I’ll be watching the space to see who’s next.
